We will transform our line now into a proper 3D object. Under its Rendering rollout check both Enable in Viewport and Enable in Renderer. Switch to Rectangular section and give it an appropriate Length and Width. Make sure that AutoSmooth is unchecked.

Right-click the object and convert it into an Editable Poly. Next - in the Element sub-object mode - select the same element as we did and click on Detach. The Detach dialog will appear, accept the settings by clicking on OK.

Now we have two objects in our scene. Select one of them and, under Geometry, go to Compound Objects from the drop-down menu. Choose Boolean, set the Operation to Union, push the Pick Operand B button, and click the second object. Right-click it and convert it once again to an Editable Poly.
