Inspiration and the Client

If you’ve been checking out DesignNewz for awhile, you might have noticed me guest author the newsletter from time to time. If you’re a seasoned designer or are just starting out, one of the best things to help clear creative blocks are inspirational galleries. I update one myself at originmaker.com in our circle of websites.

As designers, we tend to live in a pretty client-driven creative vacuum. Most tend to want the same old same old, but from time to time you may get the opportunity to have creative freedom. If you’re in that fortunate position, this may be the time to think outside the box.

You’re on the web. You see sites you like and those you don’t. The great thing about inspirational galleries is that they not only have the best of web design, but also different art styles period. It seems obvious, but they really do hold some of the most concentrated design profiles you can use as a resource.

And don’t worry if the client is type that demands the sterile, unimaginative designs you see all over. That’s just their nature. In the end, the paycheck is what matters. Besides, if clients had design sense and were full of creativity, they’d be your competition and not your paying customer.
